Stone Masonry

Making Vision a Reality

When done correctly, Stone Masonry provides a strong and beautiful element to any construction project. It can be a great alternative to bricks and blocks and often adds a unique appeal. The skilled masons at Two Brothers Masonry understand how to arrange stones carefully in a polygonal pattern, binding them securely with mortar to create solid walls, foundations, and other structures.

Rubble Stone Masonry

These stones come in varying shapes and sizes with any sharp edges eliminated. There are several types available including Coursed stones, which are used more commonly for higher-end commercial and residential applications, Non-Coursed stones, which are used in lesser focal areas like foundations, garages, and walls, and Square stones, which are meant to be laid in different depths along straight cut walls.

Ashlar Stone Masonry

These stones are prepared for specific types of projects and applications, dressed to fit unique requirements. This method warrants a careful balance between unity and variety and must not become overly accurate with side and edges. Plus the height and length of the stones are measured within boundaries that help define the look of the patterns they create.  Depending on the manner of the stone dressing, a structure can appear rough, rocky, chamfered, or smooth, which can create quite different looks. Consequently, less mortar is used on these stones because of their more deliberate, square shape.

Rules & Benefits

There are many rules and benefits involving Stone Masonry. Here are a few to note:

  • For durable structures, the best stones should be used and ones with defects are best avoided.
  • An emphasis on varying vertical joints will assure a better design.
  • Stone should be wet before placed. This prevents any absorption away from the mortar.
  • Careful attention should be given to generating a uniform height during the building phase. As the wall raises, it should be done in unison.
  • For a good outcome, thick mortar joints should be avoided.
  • A good range for curing time is 2 to 3 weeks.

Stone masonry is a long lifespan material for building. It is cost-effective regarding electricity and requires little maintenance if done properly. The beauty it creates adds a uniqueness to your home or structure, and it is highly safe when considering its ability to tolerate and retard heat, which is why it is a great choice for fireplaces.
